About the project

Washington Street still holds the last three buildings of Little Syria, the Lower Manhattan neighborhood where many of New York’s first Arab immigrants settled: the tenement at 109 Washington Street, the Downtown Community House, and St. George’s Melkite Church.

The studio asks what an Arab American museum could be on this site. The project takes the church’s facade as a fixed condition, and [your design move in one or two sentences].

One working thread follows Nageeb Arbeely, publisher of Kawkab America and an interpreter at Ellis Island, [how his story shapes the visitor’s path].
